Mehana serves authentic Bulgarian food as what they promised. Located in Lamp Quarters in Marikina, this place is one of a kind as they claim to be one of the first Bulgarian restaurant in the country. As per the owner, they serve traditional Bulgarian recipes that he got from his grand parents.
Though, it’s a bit hot in Manila, I still find the fireplace amusing. It added a rustic, country vibe accent to the place. Don’t worry they won’t light it up.
We were served with the following:
I liked that the Panini Sandwich has loads of vegetables and mayonnaise. French fries on the side made this one whole meal. They make their sauces and sausages from scratch too. Overall, it tasted delicious. This is something that I’d have again.
The Moussaka has a soft crust that tends to crumble due to the overflowing meat. It was so stuffed. All meat, potatoes and some veggies inside in Bechamel sauce. The Yogurt on the side was a little overwhelming though.
This dish was considered their ‘Adobo.’ According to the owner, every family knows how to make it in Bulgaria. You can tell that it was slow cooked as the meat was tender. The sauce has all that flavors of carrots, onions and tomatoes.
I personally haven’t tried any Bulgarian food, so I do not have anything to compare it to. But I can say that they have flavorful dishes and that I will definitely be giving it another try.
