MANILA, Philippines — SM Supermalls has unveiled its inaugural “SM Supermalls Sustainability Digest 2025: Work and Wins,” highlighting the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its operations and create safer, more resilient, and environmentally responsible spaces for Filipinos and the communities it serves.

The comprehensive report showcases SM Supermalls’ sustainability initiatives anchored on three key pillars: energy, water, and waste management. Through these efforts, SM continues to advance environmental responsibility while building stronger communities and promoting long-term resilience across its nationwide network of Supermalls.

“What makes the sustainability approach of SM Supermalls unique is the scale in which we are able to implement our hard work. For us, sustainability is not about mere compliance. It is deeply embedded in every aspect of operations across our nationwide network of most-loved Supermalls to serve our customers and communities better,” said Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing.

A Legacy of Sustainability

SM Supermalls’ commitment to environmental stewardship began decades ago, with early initiatives in the 1990s led by Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings. Among these pioneering efforts was the installation of sewage treatment plants that allowed recycled water to be used for irrigation, sanitation, and air-conditioning systems.

Building on this foundation, SM continues to evolve its sustainability practices through integrated solutions focused on renewable energy, responsible water use, and efficient waste management across its mall operations nationwide.

Advancing Energy Efficiency and Renewable Solutions

SM Supermalls continues to explore ways to improve energy efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy as part of its long-term sustainability goals.

According to Junias M. Eusebio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Mall Operations, solar energy plays an important role in complementing the existing energy mix and supporting the company’s environmental objectives.

“Not all solar energy can power the whole supply. But rather, it complements the energy mix of the grid plus the solar energy we generate,” Eusebio shared.

Through these initiatives, SM continues to take meaningful steps toward reducing environmental impact while maintaining efficient mall operations that serve millions of customers nationwide.

Bringing Sustainability Closer to Communities

Beyond internal operations, SM Supermalls actively engages customers and communities by creating opportunities for everyone to participate in sustainability efforts.

“Our scale gives us the unique privilege of involving our customers and communities across the country in the shared journey toward sustainability. SM not only strives to implement measures that preserve our natural resources, we also empower everyone to engage with customer touchpoints on sustainability at their most-loved SM mall,” said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

Through various mall-based programs and initiatives, SM encourages customers, employees, partners, and communities to take part in building a cleaner and greener future.

Strengthening Disaster Resilience Through Innovation

SM Supermalls also continues to enhance community resilience against natural disasters by investing in infrastructure and technology, including upgraded rainwater catchment basins, automated weather stations, and earthquake-monitoring systems.

Carrying forward Mr. Sy’s vision, sustainability remains a core element in how SM malls are designed, managed, and operated—ensuring that these spaces remain safe and prepared for the challenges of the future.

Working Together Toward a Sustainable Future

In partnership with government agencies, local government units, stakeholders, and volunteers, SM Supermalls continues to strengthen its role in advancing environmental protection and community resilience.

These efforts also support SM Prime’s Net Zero 2040 goal, which aims to increase the use of renewable energy across its properties and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the importance of environmental action and sustainable development.

Through the SM Supermalls Sustainability Digest 2025: Work and Wins, SM highlights not only its achievements but also its continuing commitment to creating meaningful change.

SM Supermalls invites everyone to be part of the SM Green Movement by participating in sustainability programs and initiatives at their most-loved SM Supermall—helping create a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future for generations to come.
